ABOUT U. RAJARAM RAO

How does one pay tributes of praise to such an illustrious gentleman, artist par excellence, one who rose from small and humble beginnings, to the stature of a stalwart among the best of artists?

Rajaram sir has trained thousands of students in the delicate skill of translating nature on to the canvas. He was born in 1911 in South Kanara , received his own training, initially at the famous Sir J. J. School of Art, followed by instructions from his uncle, the late Udipi Pandurang Rao, a famous artist in his own right, patronised by the Royal family of Baroda and then under the kindly eye of Mumbai’s veteran artist of fine art, S. L. Haldankar.

The strong roots of Rajaram Fine Art Institute, was founded by U. Rajaram Rao in the year 1940 with a single mission to dedicate his life towards imparting and spreading art in this country. In this venture, at every step, he was given every encouragement and support by his loving wife, Nirmaladevi.

Thousands of students, potential Renoirs, Amrita Sher Gills and Van Goghs, were trained in this Institute. One remembers him, in his unassuming manner, going from easel to easel, correcting a line here and a curve there or brightening up some colour.

Like the ideal man conceptualised in the Gita, he had ‘ set his heart on his work, and never on its rewards’. For him, to teach was to worship.

His paintings, exquisite water colours, glorious oil paintings and memorable charcoal drawings will remain to remind us of this artist ‘ He never dies, he is in eternity.
